A Deeper Look Inside Lipotropic + B12

What is Lipotropic + B12?

Lipotropic + B12 is a compounded injectable combining lipotropic substances; typically Methionine, Inositol, and Choline (MIC); with Vitamin B12 (cyanocobalamin, hydroxocobalamin, or methylcobalamin). These nutrients support the metabolism of fats, energy production, and methylation pathways. Lipotropic+B12 injections are used to support weight-management programs, energy, and correction of B12 deficiency under medical supervision. The injection is typically administered subcutaneously or intramuscularly on a weekly or bi-weekly schedule, depending on your provider’s protocol, labs, and goals. Compounded MIC+B12 injections are not FDA-approved. FDA-approved B12 products (single-agent) are available for pernicious anemia and confirmed B12 deficiency. MIC combination injections are prepared by state-licensed compounding pharmacies under Section 503A of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. A valid prescription from a licensed healthcare provider is required. Not all applicants qualify. Lipotropic+B12 injections are intended as an adjunct to a comprehensive health plan, not as a stand-alone weight-loss treatment. Individual results vary.

The Science

Methionine is an essential sulfur-containing amino acid and a precursor to S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe), a universal methyl donor. Inositol, though not a vitamin, functions in cell signaling and lipid metabolism. Choline is essential for phosphatidylcholine synthesis, neurotransmitter production (acetylcholine), and hepatic VLDL export. Together, these lipotropics support fat metabolism and hepatic function.

Vitamin B12 is a water-soluble vitamin required for red blood cell production, DNA synthesis, and neurologic function. B12 deficiency causes fatigue, anemia, and neurologic symptoms, and is more common in older adults, vegans, and those with malabsorption conditions. Clinical evidence that MIC combinations enhance weight loss in individuals without nutrient deficiency is limited; benefits are generally greatest when B12 or other nutrient status is genuinely low.

Do not use Lipotropic+B12 injections if you:

  • Have known hypersensitivity to cobalt, cyanocobalamin, or any ingredient
  • Have Leber’s hereditary optic neuropathy (certain B12 forms are contraindicated)
  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding without provider approval
  • Have severe liver or kidney disease

Tell your provider before starting Lipotropic+B12 injections if you:

  • Have kidney or liver disease
  • Have a history of polycythemia
  • Take methotrexate, chloramphenicol, or metformin (which can affect B12 absorption)
  • Have diabetes or gout
  • Have a history of blood clots

Common side effects may include: injection-site redness or pain, flushing, transient nausea, diarrhea, mild headache, body odor (methionine), rash.

Serious but less common risks may include: hypersensitivity reactions, hypokalemia (rare, with B12 correction of severe deficiency), and exacerbation of polycythemia.

This is not a complete list of side effects or contraindications. Compounded MIC+B12 is not FDA-approved. It should be used as part of a comprehensive plan including diet, exercise, and medical supervision. Talk to a licensed healthcare provider before starting or continuing Lipotropic+B12.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's in a Lipotropic + B12 injection?

The injection combines lipotropic substances; Methionine, Inositol, and Choline (MIC); with Vitamin B12. Methionine is a methyl donor, Inositol supports cell signaling and lipid metabolism, Choline is required for fat transport and liver function, and B12 supports energy metabolism and red blood cell production.

Lipotropic+B12 injections are typically used as a complement to diet, exercise, and medical supervision; not as a stand-alone weight-loss treatment. Benefits are often greatest in individuals with existing B12 deficiency or suboptimal methylation. Clinical evidence for weight loss in nutrient-replete individuals is limited.

Typical schedules range from weekly to every other week, depending on your provider’s protocol and your response. The injection is given subcutaneously or intramuscularly and can be self-administered at home after training.

Most people tolerate Lipotropic+B12 well. Common reactions include mild injection-site soreness, flushing, transient nausea, or a temporary body odor from methionine. Serious reactions are rare.

Complete our online health assessment, share any recent labs (especially B12 and folate if available), and connect with a licensed provider. If appropriate, you’ll receive a personalized injection schedule and medication shipped to you.
